Abbott and Google Health Partner on Glucose Insights

Abbott, a multinational healthcare company listed on the NYSE under the ticker symbol ABT, has formed a new partnership with Google Health. This collaboration aims to transform the way individuals understand and manage their health by combining glucose insights from Abbott’s Lingo biowearable device with Google’s expertise in artificial intelligence and consumer technology, enabling people to take a more proactive approach to their health through personalized metabolic insights.

Integrating Health Data into Daily Life

The partnership between Abbott and Google Health is designed to provide users with a seamless and AI-powered experience, integrating metabolic health insights into their daily routines. By leveraging the Google Health app, users of the Lingo device will be able to view glucose trends in conjunction with other health and wellness metrics, gaining a deeper understanding of how their daily behaviors impact their overall well-being. The Google Health Coach will utilize these insights to deliver personalized recommendations, empowering users to develop sustainable habits related to nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and recovery.

The collaboration will focus on three key areas:

  • Enhancing Health Understanding through Glucose Data: By integrating ongoing glucose insights from the Lingo continuous glucose monitor into the Google Health platform, users will gain a more full understanding of their body’s response to daily habits, enabling them to make informed lifestyle and nutrition choices.
  • Providing Personalized Health Guidance through AI: The combination of glucose insights with the Google Health Coach will provide users with tailored recommendations, helping them build healthier habits and improve their overall well-being.
  • Advancing Metabolic Health Research: The partnership will conduct one of the largest real-world metabolic health studies to date, analyzing continuous glucose, wearable, laboratory, and survey data to uncover connections between activity, sleep, wellbeing, and metabolic health, informing the development of more personalized guidance and innovation in metabolic health.

The Growing Crisis of Prediabetes

The global prevalence of metabolic health challenges is on the rise. In the United States, prediabetes, a rapidly growing health crisis, affects over 115 million adults, with more than 2 in 5 adults impacted and approximately 8 in 10 unaware of their condition.[1] Furthermore, poor metabolic health can increase the risk of developing chronic conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers.[2] The partnership between Abbott and Google Health aims to empower individuals to better understand the connection between their daily habits and overall well-being, enabling earlier and more informed action to mitigate the development and progression of conditions related to poor metabolic health.

Historically, individuals have relied on general advice or occasional medical consultations to understand the impact of their lifestyle on their health. However, with the advent of continuous monitoring, users can now receive immediate feedback on the effects of their choices, allowing them to adopt a proactive approach to managing their health rather than waiting for a medical event to occur. This shift from reactive to proactive management marks a significant change in how individuals interact with their physiology.

Making Personalized Health Insights Accessible

“The biggest challenge in healthcare isn’t treating disease – it’s helping people stay healthier longer,” said Olivier Ropars, divisional vice president of Abbott’s Lingo business. “Abbott’s leadership in biowearables and Google’s expertise in AI and consumer technology create a powerful opportunity to make personalized insights available at unprecedented scale. Additionally, we are advancing metabolic health research through one of the largest real-world studies of its kind, generating new insights into the relationship between glucose and everyday behaviors. That research will help shape future AI-powered guidance and metabolic health innovation. Together, we can help people better understand their bodies and take action before health challenges become health conditions.”

Accessibility and Availability of the System

The Lingo system is designed for individuals aged 18 and above who are not using insulin and wish to make informed decisions about their health. By providing insights into how food, movement, and stress affect glucose levels, Lingo enables users to make small, science-backed adjustments that can lead to measurable improvements in overall health and well-being.

What to Expect From the Lingo App

The Lingo health integrations will continue to roll out in the Google Health app later this year. Interested individuals can sign up at hellolingo.com to learn more about Lingo and receive updates on new features and developments.
