The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has proven highly successful at reducing the risk of cervical cancer in women, according to new findings from a UK study. Researchers examined all cervical cancer diagnoses in women aged 20 to 64 in England between 2006 and 2019. The analysis focused on three cohorts of women who received the Cervarix vaccine during that period.
Cervical cancer rates dropped by 87% in women who received the jab at ages 12 to 13. The protective effect waned slightly as the age of vaccination increased. The study found a 62% reduction in women offered the vaccine between 14 and 16, and a 34% reduction in those aged 16 to 18.
This research marks the first time the UK has assessed the real-world effectiveness of the HPV vaccination program, which launched nationwide in 2008. The initial rollout used the bivalent Cervarix vaccine, which targets the two most common cancer-causing strains of the virus. Since September 2012, England has switched to the quadrivalent Gardasil vaccine.

The study, conducted by researchers at King’s College London, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), and the National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service (NCRAS), estimates the program has prevented around 450 cervical cancers and 17,200 precancerous cases over an 11-year span. Almost all cervical cancers are linked to HPV infection, which explains why vaccinating before sexual activity begins offers the strongest defense.
Widespread adoption yields results
The vaccine targets the primary cancer-causing strains, HPV 16 and 18. By stopping these specific infections, the jab stops the cellular changes that often lead to malignancy. High uptake among school-aged children has been the driving force behind these numbers.
Michelle Mitchell, chief executive of Cancer Research UK, called the results “historic.” She noted that the data provides the first concrete proof that the vaccine protects thousands of women from developing the disease. Dr. Vanessa Saliba, a Consultant Epidemiologist at Public Health England, emphasized that the findings confirm the vaccine saves lives.

While the study highlights the success of the current school-based program, the efficacy gap between younger and older recipients suggests a critical window for vaccination. If vaccination rates drop, the long-term decline in cervical cancer could stall, leaving a larger population exposed to HPV infection and subsequent cell abnormalities. This dynamic highlights a recurring challenge in public health: the value of preventative measures often relies on maintaining consistent coverage over time.
Lead author Professor Peter Sasieni stated that cervical cancer could become a rare disease if vaccination and screening rates remain high. “Assuming most people continue to get the HPV vaccine and go for screening,” he said, “cervical cancer will become a rare disease.” He pointed to the success of Covid-19 vaccines as evidence of the technology’s power to control disease.
Public Health England encourages eligible individuals to take the vaccine when offered in schools or through catch-up programs until age 25. The combination of immunization and screening remains the primary strategy for keeping cervical cancer rates low.
