CHI Saint Joseph Health encourages a heart-healthy lifestyle

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Each February, we recognize American Heart Month, and CHI Saint Joseph Health is encouraging Kentuckians to prioritize a heart-healthy lifestyle by scheduling annual screenings and making knowledgeable choices at home, which can be lifesaving.

“Heart disease is the number one leading cause of death in America,” said Steve Lin, MD, CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group – Cardiology. “But people can take charge of their heart health by making lifestyle changes and staying up to date on screenings to live a long and healthy life.”

Across the US, one person dies every 34 seconds from cardiovascular disease, according to figures from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Annual screenings are one of the first steps people can take when regaining control of their health and are essential for determining how issues like blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels individually impact them.

Back in 2011, nutrition experts at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health worked alongside researchers at Harvard Health Publications to compile an eating plan for optimal health.

When it comes to life expectancy, the UK is falling down the global ranks, according to new analysis.

Researchers found that 70 years ago people in the UK had one of the longest life expectancies ratings in the world and it ranked 7th globally behind countries such as Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

The new analysis has been published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine and it states that in 2021, the UK was ranked 29th.

Global life expectancy ratings from 1952 to 2021 were examined by academics from the University of Oxford and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
