Depression, Poor Mental Health in Young Adults Linked to Higher Cardiovascular Risks

By American Heart Association News

(HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Jan. 31, 2023 (American Heart Association News) — Young adults with depression or overall poor mental health report more heart attacks, strokes and risk factors for cardiovascular disease than their peers without mental health issues, new research shows.

The findings, published recently in the Journal of the American Heart Association, add to a large body of evidence linking cardiovascular disease risk and death with depression, but leave unanswered questions about how one may lead to the other.

“While the relationship between heart disease and depression is likely to be bidirectional, it’s important to prioritize mental health among younger adults as this may be beneficial in reducing heart disease and improving overall heart health,” said the study’s lead author, Dr. Yaa Adoma Kwapong, a postdoctoral research fellow at Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease in Baltimore.

It’s ‘Telehealth vs. No Care’: Doctors Say Congress Risks Leaving Vulnerable Patients

When the covid-19 pandemic hit, Dr. Corey Siegel was more prepared than most of his peers.

Half of Siegel’s patients — many with private insurance and Medicaid — were already using telehealth, logging onto appointments via phones or computers. “You get to meet their family members; you get to meet their pets,” Siegel said. “You see more into their lives than you do when they come to you.”

Siegel’s Medicare patients weren’t covered for telehealth visits until the pandemic drove Congress and regulators to temporarily pay for remote medical treatment just as they would in-person care.

Siegel, section chief for gastroenterology and hepatology at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, is licensed in three states and many of his Medicare patients are frequently driving two to three hours round trip for appointments, “which isn’t a small feat,” he said .

Democrats Unload On ‘Huge Anti-Vaxxer’ Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

WASHINGTON ― Congressional Democrats unloaded on 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Thursday, calling his views on vaccines dangerous and urging him to drop his long shot campaign against President Joe Biden.

“He’s a huge anti-vaxxer. I don’t think that’s the kind of leadership we need,” Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) told HuffPost.

“I think he’s diverged dramatically from a fact-based approach to public policy,” added Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.). “At some point, he might want to consider that what he’s doing is hurting President Biden.”

Mon. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) said he had “a hard time understanding why someone with an IQ like that is so gullible to a second- or third-grade level to accept some of the stuff he’s peddling.”

Kennedy, the son of another US Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of President John F. Kennedy, announced his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in

Sweeteners may damage DNA and increase cancer risk

  • A new study finds that a common artificial sweetener can damage your DNA.
  • The zero-calorie sweetener in question is sucralose, sold under the brand name Splenda. It is about 600 times sweeter than table sugar.
  • The study found that sucralose may lead to a leaky gut lining, and increase the activity of genes related to inflammation and cancer.

A study from researchers at North Carolina State University suggests that a chemical formed from one artificial sweetener might also damage our DNA.

The zero-calorie sweetener in question is sucralose, which is about 600 times sweeter than table sugar,

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently recommended against using certain sugar substitutes to help lose weight, saying there is little evidence of long-term benefits.

Sucralose, known in the United States by the brand name Splenda, is used in thousands of products, including baked goods, beverages, chewing gum, gelatin and frozen dairy desserts.

AI Kanater brand tahini recalled due to salmonella

Health Canada has issued a recall for AI Kanater brand tahini after salmonella contamination was detected by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)

According to the notice issued on Tuesday, the recalled product has been sold in Quebec, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

The health agency asks Canadians to avoid consuming, using, selling, serving or distributing the recalled product because food contaminated with salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.

Health Canada says food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick, especially for children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.

According to the federal health agency, healthy people exposed to salmonella may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea.

Health Canada advises people to contact their healthcare provider if they become sick from consuming a recalled product. If you have recalled the

Multivitamin protects aging brain, science suggests

Multivitamin supplements may help slow the normal forgetfulness that comes with aging, reported researchers Wednesday.

The analysis of data from more than 3,500 older participants showed that those who took a daily Centrum Silver pill over a period of three years had better memories than those who received a placebo treatment, according to a report published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The effects seen in the study are “very, very encouraging,” said study co-author Adam Brickman, a professor of neuropsychology at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University.

“Cognitive change and memory loss are a top health concern for older adults,” he said. “And we don’t have many strategies to mitigate the changes that come with aging. So it’s encouraging that a supplement can help address one of the main health concerns older adults have.”

To explore whether a daily multivitamin could benefit cognitive function,

Collaborating locally is key for progress globally towards health-related SDGs

A new progress report is being jointly released today by the 13 signatory agencies of the Global Action Plan for Healthy Lives and Well-being for All (SDG3 GAP). The report entitled “What worked? What didn’t? What’s next?” reflects four years of joint work by major multilateral agencies outlining what has and has not worked in strengthening collaboration and support to accelerate country progress towards health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This year marks the halfway point toward the SDGs, but the world is lagging behind to achieve the global goals. Since its launch in 2019, the SDG3 GAP enabled the creation of new collaboration structures between the signatory agencies in key areas such as sustainable financing and primary health care among others. At least 67 countries are involved in on one or more of the SDG3 GAP accelerator themes.
