  • Experts say that now is the time for caution

The Biden administration has announced that it will end the COVID-19 pandemic state of emergency on May 11.

The state of emergency was started under the Trump administration in March 2020. The declaration of an emergency opens up a host of expansive options to combat the outbreak, including expanding access to healthcare, COVID-19 tests and vaccines.

Public healthcare experts who spoke to Healthlinefor this story have concerns about the pace of this change and how ending the state of emergency could affect the US healthcare system moving forward.

Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine thinks that any stoppage of the state of emergency at this stage is

As more research emerges, the more we uncover the extent to which gut health and overall health are linked. Gut microbiome health is connected to so many different facets of our health and well-being beyond mere digestion, and in turn is influenced by several lifestyle factors, including the foods we eat. That’s right, just by including some gut-healthy lunches into your weekly rotation—or adding in some gut-healthy ingredients into your usual favorites—you’ll be setting up your whole system for success. And here’s why.

The Benefits of Eating for Gut Health (at Lunch and Beyond)

The gut microbiome refers to the flourishing community of over a trillion microorganisms living in your large intestine, made up of mostly bacteria, but also different kinds of yeasts and viruses too. When the biome is

Bray to get more e-bikes after 1,000 users logged in first week

The demand has resulted in new bikes and stands being added around the town, Green Party Councilor Erika Doyle has confirmed.

“I anticipated that the scheme would be a success given the amount of people that contacted me in advance of the launch, but it has exceeded expectations, said Cllr Doyle.

“So far, almost 3,000 bike trips have taken place since the scheme was launched on June 18. Almost 7,000 kilometers have been cycled using the Bolt eBikes.

“I have been speaking to people who are using the bikes for fun, to go to the supermarket, for some exercise, to get to and from work, or to get to public transport. Many of these are car users who are using the bikes as an alternative and each one of them takes a town center car journey off the road.

“This is a pilot scheme but instead of waiting until the

If you want to terminate your employment, the first thing you need to do is read your contract.

Most physician employment agreements have substantial termination provisions. You need to know what yours says regarding termination with and without cause, what notice is required, and what other provisions will be triggered by termination.

Many times, employment agreements have an expiration date. For example, if the contract is a three year agreement with an effective date of January 1, 2023 the contract will expire on December 31, 2025. However, it is essential to be aware of any automatic renewal provisions. Some contracts require advance notice

Mystery cluster of brain disease striking healthy adults robbing them of ability to talk, walk

A cluster of mysterious brain diseases has struck down at least 200 people in a small province and baffled doctors.

More than 200 residents in New Brunswick, Canada, have been affected by the dementia-like disorder that causes vivid hallucinations, an inability to talk and write, memory lapses and even physical paralysis.

Experts say the cases date back to 2015 and are among people aged 18 to 84, dozens of whom were healthy before being struck down by the mystery illness.

One of those patients is Gabrielle Cormier who, at age 20, had to pause her love of figure skating and leave university when she fell ill in 2019, becoming so debilitated that she now needs a wheelchair.

Health officials investigating the cases are probing whether the culprit is food and water contaminated with blue-green algae blooms in water sources.

Another was heavy exposure to the herbicide glyphosate.

Dix in discussion with Catholic-run health authority about allowing MAiD after outrage over forced transfers

Days after BC Health Minister Adrian Dix told CTV News he had no plans to change an agreement that allows a Catholic-run health authority to opt out of providing medical assistance in dying (MAiD) at its facilities for religious reasons, he has changed his tune .

Dix says he and his ministry have now opened up discussions with Providence Health Care about changing its policy of transferring palliative care patients who have been approved for MAiD out of St. Paul’s Hospital.

That’s what happened to 34-year-old Sam O’Neill, who had to be sedated to be moved to a nearby hospice for MAiD in the final hours of her life. She never regained consciousness to say goodbye to her family before undergoing the procedure in April.

“That wasn’t patient-focused care as we would expect it to be,” said Dix. “So we are absolutely talking to Providence and absolutely talking to St

Small decrease in kidney function leads to poor health: study

A new Canadian study published in the British Medical Journal suggests that even a small reduction in kidney function could result in poor health outcomes for young people.

Researchers surveyed health records from eight million people in Ontario from the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) between 2008 and 2021. The research focused on adults aged 18 to 65 who had at least one test for kidney function but no history of kidney disease.

Of the participants, 18 percent between the ages of 18 to 39 had kidney function somewhat “below normal levels” but not enough to trigger the threshold of having chronic kidney disease.

Dr. Manish Sood, the senior researcher of the study and kidney specialist at The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa, says patients in this group are in the “gray zone.”

“We showed in young people 18 to 39 even a slight decline – 25

Study shows nut consumption boosts memory and brain health in seniors

The health benefits of nuts

Nutritional interventions are effective approaches to reduce the burden of or prevent age-related conditions, including cognitive decline and cardiovascular disease. To this end, previous studies suggest that nut consumption is protective against cognitive impairment.
Studies that include nuts in the Mediterranean diet have also reported cognitive benefits in older adults. Likewise, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have demonstrated the benefits of nuts on impaired vascular function; however, there is limited evidence for the effects of nut consumption on central arteries near the brain.

Grocery prices making healthy food unaffordable for BC families, report says

Many BC families in lower-income households cannot afford to have healthy, nutritious diets due to food costs.

A BC Center for Disease Control report, Food Costing in BC 2022found that the average cost for a nutritious diet for a family of four in May and June 2022 was $1,263 per month.

“Food insecurity is a significant public health issue,” said Dr. Geoff McKee, BC Center for Disease Control’s medical director of population and public health.

“The price of food does not affect everyone equally and the root cause of household food insecurity is low income.”

Could Gwyneth Paltrow’s Liquid Lunch Actually Be Healthy? Experts Weight In

In case you missed it, Gwyneth Paltrow’s diet came under scorn recently, particularly her bone broth lunch. This was just one component of her unorthodox “wellness routine” that she revealed on the podcast The Art of Being Well With Dr. Cole. Many people took to social media to question their food choices—and their rectal ozone therapy. So, we wondered how healthy her bone broth habit really was and went to the experts to find out.

First, what exactly is bone broth? “Bone broth is a nutritious liquid that is made by simmering animal bones and connective tissue in water for an extended period of time,” said Dan LeMoine, co-founder of Re:vitalize Weight Loss and author of Fear No Food.

But don’t confuse this with the cans of broth you see in stores. The main difference is that bone broth is cooked much longer, according to Dr. Kellyann Petrucci, naturopathic
