Michelle Obama launches company to promote healthy food for kids

WASHINGTON — Michelle Obama announced Wednesday that she has co-founded a company to make and sell healthier food and drinks for kids, products that she says will be less detrimental to their long-term health because of their lower sugar and higher nutrient content.

The former first lady’s work with PLEZi Nutrition is an extension of her efforts to improve child nutrition while she was in the White House.

“I’ve learned that on this issue, if you want to change the game, you can’t just work from the outside,” she said during a keynote address in New York at a conference on the future sponsored by The Wall Street Journal . “You’ve got to get inside. You’ve got to find ways to change the food and beverage industry itself.”

“So today, I’m proud to announce the national launch of a company designed not only to provide better products, but to jump-start

Smugglers ice cream sneaks vegetables into its flavours, but there was no such hiding for its three founding fathers when it came to launching their brand. Having secured a deal with Waitrose, snow during launch week in March was followed by weeks of rain, and the trio had an unwanted start-up challenge on their hands.

“Because it’s potted ice cream, it’s less seasonal than lollies, but you still need people to be in the mood to buy it,” recalls Smugglers co-founder Toby Moore. “We are in the lap of gods but it’s the same with beer or soft drinks.”

“We’re hoping not to just provide healthy and delicious drinks and snacks for kids, but to jumpstart a race to the top that will transform the entire food industry,” Obama wrote in a PLEZi Nutrition press release announcing the launch. “Because let’s face it, even after everything we accomplished during the White House years, it is still simply too

Eating a Mediterranean-Style Diet May Equal Taking 4,000 More Steps

  • New research is suggesting that what we eat can also help contribute to our daily step goals by as much as 4,000 additional steps.
  • People who had a healthier, Mediterranean-type diet were found to have better physical fitness.
  • Eating healthily was associated with better metabolic health, as well.

For many people getting enough “steps in” has become part of a daily fitness goal.

So much so that everything from Google Maps to Apple Watches helps us keep track of how many steps we’ve taken in a day. But new research is suggesting that what we eat can also help contribute to our daily step goals by as much as 4,000 additional steps.

Promoting lower-calorie takeaways in delivery apps ‘could cut obesity’

Helping people choose lower-calorie options when ordering takeaways in food delivery apps can help tackle obesity, three new studies suggest.

Data presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Dublin suggests that displaying healthier foods and restaurants more prominently – and/or making small portions the default option – helps people choose more wisely.

Such measures, together with showing calorie labels, reduced the total calorie content of takeaways by 2-15%, the research indicated.

Popular food delivery apps in the UK include UberEats, JustEat and Deliveroo.

Dr Filippo Bianchi, from the innovation charity Nesta and the Behavioral Insights Team, together with colleagues from the University of Oxford, carried out research using a simulated delivery app and compared the results to a control app.

“Our findings suggest that simple interventions could help people select lower-calorie options for delivery apps without the need to remove less healthy options,” said Dr. Bianchi.

It’s alarming to know that half of the infants aged between six and 23 months in Bangladesh are consuming unhealthy and ultra-processed food. According to the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey 2022, conducted by the National Institute of Population Research and Training (NIPORT), the diet for 50 percent of infants contains sugar-laden beverages and foods that are high in fat or sodium content including chips, chanchur, instant noodles, burgers, etc. These were deemed unhealthy based on WHO and UNICEF guidelines. Overall, the survey says, there are more than 23 lakh children consuming unhealthy food.

Unfortunately, the problem is not limited to infants or minors. Thanks to the proliferation of packaged food in the country, most

Dietician Explains How Eating Up to 5 Eggs per Day Transformed His Health

A common breakfast question is “How do you like your eggs in the morning?” but one dietitian prefers asking a slightly different version. For Jesse Feder, it’s not about how he has his eggs but instead how many he has.

Dietary health has always been very important for the registered dietician and personal trainer, who monitors everything he consumes to ensure he’s getting the most balanced diet.

High cholesterol has long been a prominent concern in his family, so Feder was always wary of eating anything that he thought was going to raise his cholesterol levels, meaning he steered clear of eggs.

The cholesterol content of a large egg is thought to be 186 milligrams, all of which is in the yolk, according to the US Department of Agriculture.
