Over 200,000 families ‘missing out on free food’

More than 200,000 pregnant women and families with young children are missing out on free food payments available through a government scheme, according to new analysis.

Only 64% of eligible people were receiving the Healthy Start payments in March 2023, according to the food charity Sustain – falling short of the government’s target of hitting 75% by the end of that month.

New analysis by the charity shows 207,000 families across England, Wales and Northern Ireland missed out on a potential £68m in Healthy Start Scheme payments in the last year.

These payments could be a lifeline for many struggling families, with the cost of living crisis seeing the price of fresh food in the UK rising by 17.8% in the year to April.

We always knew Bear Grylls had balls — but this is ridiculous.

For many years, he lived as a vegan, existing on raw juices, vegetables and pulses.

But Grylls has now gone to the other extreme and lauded the health benefits of eating organs such as the liver, heart and even the testicles.

The adventurer, 48, said his diet was built around “grass-fed, good quality” red meat, raw dairy and fruit as well as organs. He steers clear of bread and pasta, and avoids processed foods.

The former soldier has even put his face to a dietary supplement range that includes “beef thyroid” and “beef lung”.

“The way I build all of my meals is around … good quality red meat,” he said in an online video. “I always throw in a bit of liver as well every few days.”

He said that he had been convinced by research that
